Womens SFC Captains

The first Longford SFC winning captain was Mary Bannon (Ardagh) in 1982. Aisling Cosgrove (Longford Slashers) and Mary Kiernan (Ballymore) were winning captains five times. Edel Quinn (Killoe) was winning captain three times, while Aoife O’Brien (Longford Slashers), Marie Brady (Clonguish), Michelle Hannify (St. Helens) and Bridget Smith (Granard) were winning captains twice. Carmel Browne was winning captain twice, for two different clubs – Longford Slashers in 1983 and Clonguish in 1989. Carmel was also Chairperson of Longford LGFA when she lifted the cup as the Clonguish captain in 1989. Yvonne Barden led Clonguish to the Leinster Club IFC title in 2005, Elizabeth Brady led Killoe to the Leinster Club IFC title in 2008, and Aisling Cosgrove led Longford Slashers to Leinster and All-Ireland Club IFC titles in 2022.

Granard’s back-to-back winning captain in 1985 & 1986 was Bridget Smith from Mullahoran. Bridget (nee Sheridan) captained Cavan to win the 1977 All-Ireland Senior Championship and captained Mullahoran to win the 1977 All-Ireland Club Championship. She won four All-Stars, was Cavan Senior ‘Player of the Year’ in 1976 and won nine Cavan SFC titles and nine Ulster titles with Mullahoran.
