Summary
The Longford Gaelic Football Club in New York was formed in November 1914 and competed in the inaugural New York Championships in 1915. The first title win came in the 1924 Junior Football Championship final (played in June 1925) with Longford NY defeating Cavan NY in the decider at Celtic Park on Long Island. The club folded during WW2 and regrouped in 1946. The 1950’s and 1960’s saw a large influx of new players from Ireland and title wins followed in 1962 JFC and 1966 SFC B. However, the introduction of 1965 Immigration Act by the US Congress had a big impact on emigration to the USA from Ireland, and by the mid 1970’s the Longford NY club found itself merged with Offaly NY for two years to help field amidst reduced numbers. The club folded when the amalgamation came to an end in 1977 but was revived in 1980 and back in competition by 1981. The great revival of the 1980’s and 1990’s resulted in JFC B title win in 1994 and JFC A title win in 1997. The club disbanded in the early 2000’s, but was revived in the early 2010’s and enjoyed success with JFC B title in 2013 and IFC title in 2017 before reaching the promised land in 2018 by winning the SFC ‘A’ title for the first time in the clubs history. In 2025 the club won the JFC A title for the first time since 1997.
