Ballymore Shamrocks did not field from 2018 to 2025 during which time their players competed with St. Colmcilles. In 2026 the club returned in amalgamation with St. Colmcilles. 

Denotes long term independent teams created from two clubs. Additionally, a number of other independent teams compete in youth competition each year, comprised of a combination of two or more of the above youth teams in a temporary amalgamation for a specific competition and/or for that specific year.

Club Locations

Longford has 22 GAA club units. 15 clubs field teams solely in adult/youth Gaelic Football, while 3 dual clubs field teams in adult/youth Gaelic Football & Hurling, and 3 dual clubs field teams in adult/youth Gaelic Football and youth hurling. The St. Munis Forgney club last fielded in adult competition in 2016, and while the club remains technically affiliated as the 22nd club via special dispensation from the GAA, they are practically inactive with their adult players compete with Ballymahon since 2022 via Rule 3.17(n)(ii).

The following are notable changes/formations over the past 70 years:

  • Longford Slashers formed in 1954 = Longford Wanderers + Whiterock Slashers. (📷 Source)
  • Ballymore reformed in 1967. Had previously competed in the 1910’s and 1920’s.
  • Ballinamuck reformed in 1967. Formed in 1890, had competed up to end of 1949.
  • Fr. Manning Gaels formed in 1969 = Éire Óg (Drumlish) + Ballinamuck. (📷 Source)
  • Young Grattans reformed in 1980. Had competed previously from 1950 to 1954.
  • Ardagh Moydow formed in 2019 = Ardagh St. Patricks + Moydow Harpers. (📷 Source)
  • Shroid Slashers ceased playing activity in 2019 and the club disbanded thereafter.
  • St. Munis Forgney adult footballers compete with Ballymahon club since 2022.
  • Carrick Sarsfields is combined Carrickedmond + Legan Sarsfields youth. (est 2002)
  • Ballymahon Forgney Gaels is combined Ballymahon + Forgney youth. (est 1999)
  • Southern Gaels is combined Cashel + St. Brigids Killashee youth. (est 1999)
  • Northern Gaels is combined Abbeylara + Mullinalaghta youth. (est 1984)
