The Leinster MFC structure was straight knockout from 1928 to 2001 and then changed to round-robin structure from 2002 to 2006 and then changed in 2007 to having a Loser Qualifier route for 1st round losing teams to win reentry to the knockout stages. The structure reverted back to straight knockout briefly in 2008 and then back to the Loser Qualifier structure from 2009 to 2017. In 2018 a group structure was introduced with round-robin games within each group ahead of knockout stages, while the grade was also changed from U-18 to U-17. This group structure has remained in place since 2018 with exception of 2020 which was straight knockout due to constraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Minor Football Championships (1928-2025)

Notes & Caveats

MFC Competition Explained: The Leinster Minor ‘A’ Championship is Larry Murray Cup while the All-Ireland Minor ‘A’ Championship is the Tom Markham Cup. The All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Championship is Paul McGirr Cup and All-Ireland Minor ‘C’ Championship is Seamus Heaney Cup. At the end of the Leinster Minor ‘A’ Championship, the winner and runner-up advance to the All-Ireland Minor ‘A’ Championship while the semi-finalists advance to the All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Championship. The remaining teams advance to the All-Ireland Minor ‘C’ Championship. There is no Leinster Minor ‘B’ or ‘C’ title or competition. Quarter Finals were introduced into All-Ireland MFC competition in 2002, with Longford playing one of the first All-Ireland MFC games that year versus near neighbours Leitrim.

Leinster MFC Shield: From 2018 to 2023, counties exiting the Leinster MFC prior to semi-final stage proceeded to the Leinster MFC Shield competition which was open to all Leinster counties failing to progress to the last four of the provincial Championship proper. Longford won the Leinster MFC Shield in 2018 defeating Dublin in the final by 1-13 to 0-11, and won it again in 2019 by defeated Wexford in the final by 3-15 to 2-5. The Seamus Heaney Cup was used for this competition, however in 2024 that cup was repurposed for the All-Ireland ‘C’ MFC (Tier 3) competition instead. Leinster MFC Shield competition ended in 2023 and was not played in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 related restrictions. The tables and graphs shown on this page includes Leinster MFC Shield data.

1930 Clarification: The 1930 Provincial Minor Football Championships were delayed due to weather. As the planned fixture dates for the All-Ireland MFC approached, Central Council instructed the Leinster Council to nominate a team for the All-Ireland Semi-Final tie versus Armagh. As reigning champions, Longford should have been the automatic choice, however for some unexplained reason Dublin were nominated instead and they went on to beat Armagh and advance to the All-Ireland MFC Final where they beat Mayo to become All-Ireland MFC winners. The Leinster MFC final then took place the following week with Dublin beating Longford to win the Leinster title. It is the only time the Provincial MFC title was won after the All-Ireland MFC title.

1942 Clarification: Longford won their first round with a walkover vs Westmeath. However ‘owing to travel difficulties’ Longford and many other counties then withdrew from the Leinster MFC as rationing on petrol and other constraints due to WW2 impacted competition.

Minor ‘A’ Championship Notes:

  • Inter-county MFC grade changed from U-18 to U-17 grade from the 2018 season onward.
  • Leinster MFC began in 1928, however the competition was never formally completed.
  • 1929 was 1st completed Leinster MFC competition with Longford emerging as winners.
  • 1929 All-Ireland MFC final delayed to March 1930 due to Dublin objection to Longford win.
  • 1930 Leinster MFC final was played a week after the All-Ireland MFC final (Dublin won both).
  • 1933 Leinster MFC game vs Offaly was the last inter-county game played at Longford Park.
  • No Leinster MFC in 1943 & 1944. Longford did not compete in 1934, 1945, 1947 or 1948.
  • Minor Board established in Longford in 1948 to improve participation in Leinster MFC.
  • Longford venue prior to 1st June 1933 was Longford Park (later the greyhound track).
  • Longford venue from 1st June 1933 to 24th April 1937 was Longford’s Gaelic Grounds.
  • On 25th April 1937 the Gaelic Grounds was officially opened and renamed Pearse Park.
