Longford in U20/U21

Longford first played U-21 Hurling Championship in the Leinster Special U-21 Hurling Championship in 1985. The winner of this competition would qualify for the Leinster U-21 Hurling Championship proper at the semi-final stage. The competition was renamed the Leinster U-21 ‘A’ Hurling Championship in 2007 and was discontinued after 2016. Longford competed from 1985 to 2009 with exception of 1988-1992, and did not compete after 2010. Since 2015 Longford has competed infrequently in the All-Ireland U-20 ‘C’ Hurling Championship or Andrew O’Neill Cup. Competition grade changed from U-21 to U-20 from 2019.

From 35 games in U20/U21 Hurling Championship, Longford Won 10 (29%), Drew 1 (3%), Lost 24 (68%).

  • Winner of Leinster Special U-21 HC qualified for Leinster U-21 HC proper.
  • In 2007 Leinster Special U-21 HC was renamed Leinster U-21 ‘A’ HC.
  • Longford entered Leinster Special U-21 HC for the first time in 1985.
  • Did not participate from 1988-1992 or from 2010 onward.
  • Due to play Kildare on 15th May 1988 – Withdrew from competition.
  • 1993 vs Westmeath was conceded – Longford could not field a team.
  • 2001 W/O vs Louth due to Foot & Mouth outbreak in Louth that week.
  • Due to play Wicklow on 20th June 2010 – Withdrew from competition.
  • Leinster U-21 ‘A’ Hurling Championship ended after 2016.
  • Longford first competed in All-Ireland U-21 ‘C’ Championship in 2015.
  • All-Ireland U-21 ‘C’ Hurling Championship is Andrew O’Neill Cup.

U20 Competition Explained: The Leinster U20 ‘A’ Championship is the SeΓ‘n Robbins Cup while the All-Ireland U20 ‘A’ Championship is the James Nolan Cup. The All-Ireland U20 ‘B’ Hurling Championship is Richie McElligott Cup while the All-Ireland U20 ‘C’ Hurling Championship is Andrew O’Neill Cup. The All-Ireland A, B and C Championships are separate and distinct tiers of competition.
