U-12 Hurling Championship (1980-2023)

In 2025 the U-12 Hurling Championship was played as a mini league with no finals, with expanded structure involving one club from Leitrim alongside six clubs from Longford. The competition was played under Go Games rules with no winner or trophy. This was the fifth year having Carrick Hurling (Leitrim) involved in Longford U-12 Hurling competition.

The teams involved were:

  • Shannon Gaels (Rathcline)
  • Carrick Hurling (Leitrim)

Note: This was Dromard’s second season in hurling. St. Dominics (Kenagh) and Shannon Gaels (Rathcline) made their return to U-12 hurling in 2025.

In 2024 the U-12 Hurling Championship was played as a mini league with no finals, with expanded structure involving one club from Leitrim alongside four clubs from Longford. The competition was played under Go Games rules with no winner or trophy. This was Dromards inaugural year in hurling competition. This was the fourth year having Carrick Hurling (Leitrim) involved in Longford U-12 Hurling competition.

Note: This was Dromard’s first season in hurling. St. Dominics (Kenagh) and Shannon Gaels (Rathcline) also played hurling at U-8 and U-10 grade in 2024.

Final played on 20th September 2023 in McGann Park.

Competition included Longford Slashers, Clonguish Gaels, Wolfe Tones and Carrick Hurling (Leitrim). This was the third year that Carrick Hurling Club from Leitrim competed in the Longford U-12 Hurling Championship.

Final was played on 13th October 2022.

Competition included Longford Slashers, Wolfe Tones, Clonguish Gaels, St. Dominics (Kenagh) & Carrick Hurling (Leitrim). This was the second year that Carrick Hurling Club from Leitrim competed in the Longford U-12 Hurling Championship.

Final was played on 17th October 2021. This was the first title by the St. Dominics (Kenagh) hurling club. This was also the first year that Carrick Hurling Club from Leitrim competed in the Longford U-12 Hurling Championship alongside Longford Slashers, Wolfe Tones, Clonguish Gaels and St. Dominics (Kenagh).

Was due to be curtain raiser to SHC final in October 2020.

Game was called off on 1st October and Wolfe Tones conceded on 4th October 2020.

When Longford Slashers won U12 Hurling Championship in 2012, the match report noted it as the clubs fourth title in five years. Slashers titles are verified for 2012, 2008 & 2007. Hence Longford Slashers must also have won the title in 2009 although no published record exists in 2009.

Note: Cashel/Killashee also called Cuchullains, later Southern Gaels.

Local media reports on 20th September 2002 that U12 Championship final is between Slashers Gaels and Cashel/Killashee (Cuchullains). Slashers Gaels are then noted as U12 Championship winners in October 18th article discussing the clubs participation in Westmeath league.

Seven teams took part in U12 Hurling Championship in 1982. St. Brendans beat Slashers Gaels in the semi-final by 3-0 to 1-0 on 2nd May 1982 at Pearse Park, while Lough Forbes Gaels beat Cashel in the other semi-final on 15th May 1982.

Final was played in June 1980. In the Losers group St. Mels Shroid won beating Slashers St. Michaels.

The following name clarifications apply to hurling finalists down the years.

  • Slashers Gaels was renamed Longford Slashers in early 2000’s.
  • Slashers St. Michaels was renamed Slashers Gaels from 1982.
  • Wolfe Tones is the hurling section of the Mostrim GAA Club.
  • Clonguish Gaels is the hurling section of the Clonguish GAA Club.
  • Lough Forbes Gaels club was renamed to Clonguish Gaels from 2000.
  • Ballymahon hurling club renamed to Ballymahon Gaels in late 1990’s.
  • Rathcline Gaels was renamed Naomh Ciarán in the early 1980’s.
  • Cashel/Killashee also called Cuchullains and later Southern Gaels.
  • St. Dominics is the youth hurling section of the Kenagh club.
  • Shannon Gaels is the youth hurling section of the Rathcline club.
  • St. Annes (1970’s) and St. Brendans (1980’s) were names for Stonepark.
  • Carrick Hurling from Leitrim joined the Longford Championship in 2021 & 2023.

2024 & 2025 Clarification: In 2024 & 2025 the U-12 Hurling competition was played as a Mini Hurling League and involved five clubs (4 from Longford, 1 from Leitrim) in 2024 and seven clubs (6 from Longford, 1 from Leitrim) in 2025. The teams included Dromard competing in hurling for the first time in 2024 as well as St. Dominics (Kenagh) renewing their hurling at U-12 and Shannon Gaels (Rathcline) making the return to youth hurling after a long absence. There was no final or winner declared due to the competition being played along strict Go Games rules.
