Note: Competition was exclusively for second teams of Senior clubs from 2011-2017.
Cups: All winners from 2011 to 2017 received Corn Mac Aodhagáin (Fr. Egan Cup) instead of Kevin Hughes Cup which had previously been used for Senior ‘B’ Championship. The Kevin Hughes Cup was repurposed in 2005 for U-21 ‘A’ Football Championship. Corn Mac Aodhagáin which had previously been used for U-21 ‘A’ Football Championship (and which is an identical twin of the Junior ‘A’ Championship cup), was then repurposed in 2011 for use in Senior ‘B’ Championship from 2011 to 2017.
No Competition (2003-2010)
Note: From 2003 the Senior ‘A’ Championship backdoor structure was changed to simple qualifier rounds for losing teams after Rounds 1 and 2, and the Senior ‘B’ Championship was discontinued. This new SFC format remained in place until qualifiers were replaced by a league-style group stage from 2009. The Senior ‘B’ Championship remained dormant from 2003 to 2010 and was revived in 2011 as a stand-alone competition for second teams of Senior clubs.
Abbeylara 5-8
Mostrim 3-6
Kevin Hughes Cup presented to winner.
Note: From 2000 the Senior ‘B’ Championship was a backdoor route for teams beaten in Rounds 1 and 2 of SFC to secure a spot in Senior ‘A’ Championship proper at the Quarter Final stage. In 2002 Abbeylara retained the Senior ‘B’ title and advanced to the SFC ‘A’ Quarter Final. This format led to some Senior ‘A’ Championship games being held up awaiting completion of the Senior ‘B’ Championship and therefore fell out of favour. From 2003 the Senior ‘A’ Championship backdoor structure was changed to simple qualifier rounds for losing teams after Rounds 1 and 2, and the Senior ‘B’ Championship was discontinued.

In 2000 Mostrim won the Senior ‘B’ title and advanced to the SFC ‘A’ Quarter Final. This format led to some Senior ‘A’ Championship games being held up awaiting completion of the Senior ‘B’ Championship and therefore fell out of favour. Mostrim 1-6
No record of which (if any) cup was presented!
Note: Cited as ‘Section B Final’ in published reports, with ‘Senior B Championship Final’ more commonly used from the mid 1980’s. Both finalists by reaching the Section B (Senior B) final therefore qualified to play in the Quarter Finals of SFC ‘A’ and the Senior B (or Section B) final itself was then played later and was not part of SFC ‘A’ qualification.
St. Marys Granard 1-10
Killoe Young Emmets 1-7
No record of which (if any) cup was presented!
St. Marys Granard completed SFC ‘A’ and SFC ‘B’ double!
Note: Cited as ‘Section B Final’ in published reports, with ‘Senior B Championship Final’ more commonly used from the mid 1980’s. In 1981 only the finalists from the qualifying group advanced to the SFC ‘A’ Quarter Final stage, however from 1982 both finalists in the qualifying group advanced to play in the Quarter Finals of SFC ‘A’ while the Senior B (or Section B) final itself was then played later and was not part of SFC ‘A’ qualification.
Dromard 2-8
Killoe Young Emmets 0-6
1981 Clarification: The 1981 Senor ‘A’ Championship draw involved 7 teams in Quarter Final ties with the 8th team coming from the winner of a Section A qualifier group (equivalent of following years ‘Section B’ which was then renamed Senior B Championship). The winner of Section A advanced to the SFC ‘A’ Quarter Final against Cashel. Dromard and Killoe Young Emmets qualified for the Section A final with Dromard winning the final and advanced to meet Cashel in the SFC ‘A’ Quarter Final. In the following years the same structure was adopted but renaming Section A to Section B and eventually renaming Section B to ‘Senior B Championship’. Hence we include this Dromard win in the Section A final in 1981 with the subsequent Section/Senior B final winners.
1981 SFC Quarter Final Draw:
- St. Patricks Ardagh v Clonguish
- Rathcline v St. Marys Granard
- Longford Slashers v Mostrim
- Cashel v Section A Winner
1981 Section A Qualifier Group:
- Dromard
- Killoe Young Emmets
- Fr. Manning Gaels
- Carrickedmond
- St. Munis Forgney
- Ballymahon
Additional Notes
1980’s Origin: Senior ‘B’ Championship effectively began in 1981 with the introduction of a qualifier group into SFC. This meant that a team had to qualify from a supplementary section (called Section A in 1981 and Section B thereafter) to secure a spot in the Senior ‘A’ Championship proper. From 1982 onward the group name changed to Section B (Senior B) with the finalists both securing spots in the for Senior ‘A’ Championship proper at the Quarter Final stage, while the Section/Senior B Final was then played later, and was not part of qualifying for SFC ‘A’. In the early years of competition, Senior ‘B’ was also referred to as Section ‘B’.
1994-1999: Changes in 1994 meant that Senior ‘B’ Championship would no longer feature Senior club teams, and would instead involve amalgamations from Intermediate and Junior grades. This new format lasted for three seasons until 1996 and for the rest of the 1990’s there was no Senior ‘B’ Championship held.
2000’s: In 2000 the SFC structure was changed to introduce a backdoor route for teams beaten in Round 1. The Senior ‘B’ Championship was revived as that backdoor route to secure a spot in the Senior ‘A’ Championship proper at the Quarter Final stage. This format led to Senior ‘A’ Championship games being held up awaiting completion of the Senior ‘B’ Championship and therefore fell out of favour. From 2003 the Senior ‘A’ Championship backdoor structure was changed to simple qualifier rounds for losing teams after Rounds 1 and 2, and the Senior ‘B’ Championship was discontinued.
2011-2017: Senior ‘B’ Championship remained dormant from 2003 to 2010 and was revived in 2011, this time as a separate and distinct competition exclusively for second teams of senior clubs. The competition was renamed ‘Senior Reserve Cup’ in 2016 and 2017 and was scrapped after 2017.
Cups Used: It is unclear which (if any) cup was presented to winners prior to 1988. In 1988 the Kevin Hughes Cup was introduced for Senior ‘B’ and was used until 2002. The Kevin Hughes cup was repurposed in 2005 for U-21 Football Championship. When Senior ‘B’ Championship was revived from 2011, Corn Mac Aodhagáin (Fr. Egan Cup – previously used for U-21 Football Championship) was presented to winners from 2011 to 2017.
1981 Dromard: In 1981 Dromard won the SFC ‘Section A’ qualifier group, beating Killoe in the final to qualify for the Senior ‘A’ Championship proper. This was not called Senior ‘B’ Championship at the time and there was no cup for winning that Section A final. However, in the years that followed a name was given to that same competition structure – Senior ‘B’ Championship, and eventually a cup was also presented to the winner. Hence we include the 1981 Dromard Section A Final win as equivalent to Senior ‘B’ Championship in the years that followed.
